Mills Jumps for Billiards Victory
Seminole Pro Tour / Holiday, FL
by Skip Maloney
Donnie Mills used his jump stick to great effect on the Seminole Pro Tour billiard stop in Holiday, FL, the weekend of May 17-18, defeating David Grossman in the finals. After being knocked to the one-loss side earlier in the day, Mills worked his way back through three opponents to capture first prize in the $8000-added event that drew 61 entrants to Hammerheads Billiards.
Mills faced Hans Berber Oglu in the final four winners’-side matches early Sunday, while his eventual opponent in the finals, Grossman, matched up with Tommy Kennedy. Oglu sent Mills westward with an 8-4 victory as Grossman moved into the hot seat match by defeating Kennedy 8-6. Grossman secured his seat in the finals with an 8-5 victory over Oglu.
On the one-loss side, Dan Lavoie moved on when Corey Deuel forfeited (his second forfeit of the tournament; he ended up in the 9-12 slot without ever having lost a match). Joining Lavoie among the final four on the left side of the bracket were Anthony Meglino, Marc Vidal, and Hunter Lombardo. Lombardo and Vidal advanced to face Mills and Kennedy, respectively, who dropped them both into the fifth-place slot and squared off against each other in the quarterfinals.
Mills defeated Kennedy in a tightly contested 8-6 quarterfinal match and renewed acquaintances with Oglu, who’d defeated him earlier, on the winners’ side of the bracket. In another 8-6 contest, Oglu dropped into third place, leaving Mills and Grossman to face each other in the finals.
Grossman jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but he only won one of the next nine games. As Mills fought his way back, Grossman hooked him on a number of occasions, leading Mills to break out his jump cue and, ultimately, make every jump shot that Grossman forced him into. It was Mills’ first win on the Seminole Pro Tour, and he was able to manage it in front of a partisan crowd that had gathered to root him on in his homeroom at Hammerheads Billiards.

Seminole Pro Tour Hits Hot-lanta
by Skip Maloney
The second event of the Seminole Pro Tour kicked off Friday at Mr. Cues II Billiards in Atlanta, GA, and now heads into its final day with 12 players returning to battle it out for the $8,000-added prize purse.
In a first-round upset, Nevel won double-hill over Johnny “The Scorpion” Archer 7-6, sending Archer to the one-loss bracket early. Nevel followed him there in the next match after facing the winner of the tour’s opening event in Palm Harbors, FL, last month, Sparky Ferrell, who bested Nevel 7-5.
Suddenly Nevel and Archer were on the opposite ends of a new bracket, where they both worked their way through 4 opponents and prepared themselves for a possible rematch among the final 12.
On the winners’ side, Ferrell went on to defeat Louis Ulrich 7-5 before running into the hot cue of Jeremy “Double J” Jones, who, after narrowly defeating Clint McCullough 7-6 in the opening round, lost only 3 of the next 17 games he played on his way to the face-off against Ferrell, whom he then defeated 8-2.
Corey Deuel, in the meantime, last year’s Player of the Year on the Seminole Tour, was on something of a hot streak as well. He drew a bye in the opening round and then proceeded to best his first three opponents—Paul Song, Gabe Owen, and Jason Richko—by a combined score of 22-6. Deuel and Jones are set to square off Sunday morning. They are joined on the winners’ side by Mitch Yarborough and Jonathan Pinegar, both of whom also drew first-round byes.
Nevel will try to get by Jason Richko in his opening round Sunday, while Archer will take on Dave Grossman, who got by his first four opponents before running in to Mitch Yarborough, who defeated him 8-4. After a 7-6 win over Duane Bourgeois in the opening round, Tommy Kennedy dropped his second-round match to Tony Crosby double-hill and will face Ferrell.
Jesse Middlebrooks, who lost a second-round match to Johnny Mattowa 7-2, will meet Steve Moore, who had worked his way through three opponents in the winners’ bracket before falling to Pinegar 8-3.
The $8,000-added event ($6K from the sponsoring Seminole Tribe and $2K from Cues II Billiards) will hand the winner $3,000. Second place will earn $2,200.

Ferrell Takes Seminole Billiards Tour Opener

Ferrell Takes Seminole Billiards Tour Opener
by Rick Davis
The 2008 season of the Seminole Pro Tour kicked off over the March 7-9 weekend at Strokers Billiards in Palm Harbor, FL, where a 64-player field matched up for the lion’s share of the $8,000 added prize fund. After three solid days of play in the 10-ball, double-elimination format it was Sparky Ferrell who came through seven matches undefeated to claim the season’s first honors.
As usual, the Seminole Pro Tour, formally known as the Florida Pro Tour, drew in an incredibly stacked field of top competitors. On the winners’ side “Rocket” Rodney Morris was an early favorite as he breezed through his first three opponents 7-1, then drilled Monica Webb 7-2, and then nearly shut out Jason Miller 8-1 to reach the hot seat match without breaking a sweat. Nearby, tour veterans Adam Wheeler and Dave Grossman matched up where Grossman edged out the win 7-5. Cleaning up perhaps the roughest portion of the winners’ side, Ferrell defeated Steve Moore 7-6, Corey Deuel 7-5, and Ronnie Wiseman 7-2 before dropping the axe on Grossman 8-1. That set up the hot seat match, in which Ferrell was able to keep control and ward off Morris with an 8-6 win to own the winners’ side.
Late on the one-loss side there was a WPBA matchup as Helena Thornfeldt faced Webb and defeated her 8-5 and then went on to eliminate Grossman double-hill. At the same time Wiseman was making a smooth comeback by ousting Wheeler 8-4 and Miller 8-5 before he was shut down by Thornfeldt 8-7 in the quarterfinals. Although Thornfeldt looked good in the semifinals, Morris’ fire was nowhere near out, and he knocked out Thornfeldt 8-3 to earn a final crack at Ferrell.
With the finals set, a single race to 9 separated Morris and Ferrell, who totally dominated the event. Neither player could keep much of an edge as the match got rolling until Ferrell made a final surge in the end and came up a 9-6 win over Morris to take the top spot.

Morris Rockets to Winner

Morris Rockets to Winner’s Circle
by Rick Davis
The final day of play at the Seminole Pro Tour ended with billiard player “Rocket” Rodney Morris going undefeated and taking down the $11,000 top prize at the Hollywood Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, FL.
The day started with Mika Immonen and Louis Ulrich in the quarterfinals, which stayed even through a 3-all score. From there Immonen caught a gear and ran three racks for a 6-3 lead. After trading the next few racks Ulrich scratched on the break, leaving Immonen to run out from the hill and claim the match 8-5.
Over to the winners’ side the hot seat match featured Corey Deuel and Morris in a safety showdown nearly every rack. Morris was able to adjust and capitalize on his chances faster, and before long he sent Deuel west 8-5.
Immonen started with a great lead up 4-2 against Deuel in the semifinals. After a smattering of scratches, safeties, and misses from both players, the score was tied at 5-all. Deuel took that as his cue to wake up and broke and ran the next two racks to reach the hill. Hammering the nail into his own coffin, Immonen came up short on a safety, which allowed Deuel to run out and take the match.

In the finals Morris shot out to an early 4-0 lead before he traded racks with Deuel to reach the hill 8-4 in the single race to 9 finals. Deuel managed to play defense and make a few runs to keep in the game and finally got within a rack with the score 7-8. But in the last rack Deuel rattled the 9 ball in the corner for what should have been an automatic shot. After the shock wore off he shook his head and went to shake Morris’ hand, conceding the match with the 9 and 10 balls hanging in opposite corners. A happy and relieved Morris said, “I made a mistake or two, and he was playing good. I was trying not to give it away at the end. I thought the pool gods must smile on you sometimes. When it’s your chance you have to earn it. There are no gifts, even though it looks that way sometimes.”

Four Players Remain at Florida Billiard Tour Finale

Four Players Remain at Florida Billiard Tour Finale
by Rick Davis
The Florida Pro Tour’s Second Annual Steve Mizerak Championship coasted through day two today as the remaining 32-player field was cut down to the top four.
Player of the Year Corey Deuel is in the hot seat match Sunday, where he faces Rodney Morris. Deuel defeated Dennis Hatch double-hill and Ronnie Wiseman 8-3 during day two, while Morris sent Gabe Owen and Thorsten Hohmann west 8-4 and 8-7, respectively. Deuel and Morris will face off in the final day of the event.
On the one-loss side Louis Ulrich was on fire. Ulrich eliminated Mike Davis 8-1 then Gabe Owen 8-6. Later in the evening he kept things interesting as he knocked out two more players, James Laderia and Wiseman, to reach the quarterfinals in day three. Meeting Ulrich in that match will be Mika Immonen, who sent his share of pros home from the event as well. Starting with Charlie Bryant 7-2, Immonen swept through the money rounds, eliminating Helena Thornfeldt 8-2, Tony Crosby 8-5, Johnny Archer 8-1, and Thorsten Hohmann 8-1. Immonen commented, “It seemed like when I didn’t make a ball, he didn’t have a shot, and when I made one, I had a good layout. I have played good the whole tournament, I played a lot of matches today and just relaxed and had a fun day. The key was to get comfortable with the tables.”
Most of the players didn’t share Immonen’s relaxed posture, and many were unhappy with the tables. After his final match Morris commented, “The tables play tough. The rails are springy—it’s hard to control the cue ball and the pockets are tight and wet. Every time you play on Diamonds you have to adjust … it’s the only table you have to do that to. You see more balls missed on these tables on then any other.” Many players relied heavily on their jump cues, as intricate kick shots could not be trusted.

Sunday will feature the final day of play, which holds the top four players and four big matches. While fourth place is guaranteed $3,500, no one wants to settle for that when the big $11,000 payout is still glittering in front of them.

Stacked Billiards Field Grinds Through the First Day

Stacked Billiards Field Grinds Through the First Day
Seminole Pro Tour / Hollywood, FL
by Rick Davis
The Seminole Florida Pro Tour began their billiards season finale at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, FL, where an 88-player field entered in search of their share of the $25,000-added prize fund.
After a blazing pace the first day eliminated all but 32 players. The final rounds were a who’s who of top national players, and the coming rounds will be just as difficult. The tour’s player of the year, Corey Deuel, is untouched on the winners’ side after taking a trio of wins going 7-1 against Adam Wheeler and Wayne Catledge then 8-6 against Mike Davis. Not far away, Gabe Owen kept himself on the winners’ side, saying, “I’ve had a good day, but it was long,” after putting in 12 hours on the tables.
On the one-loss side, player of the year runner-up Steve Moore is still alive after a second-round loss 7-3 to Charlie Bryant. Moore commented, “My first two matches were rocky. I’m using a new shaft and aiming system, so things are spiced up a little. Charlie Bryant put me on the one-loss side—he played well, but I could have played better. If I can keep it together, I should do okay.” Moore ousted a pair of opponents, both 7-2, to face WPBA Pro Monica Webb in the morning.
With top players everywhere no bracket is safe, although the winners’ bracket became especially deadly in the evening rounds. Dennis Hatch defeated Charlie Bryant 7-5 then Louis Ulrich 8-3. Hatch now faces Deuel. In the lower half of the chart Rodney Morris defeated Troy Frank 8-6 and will now play Owen, while Thorsten Hohmann ended his night by defeating Mika Immonen 8-5 and will face tour regular Nathan Rose early Saturday.

With players like Johnny Archer, Corey Deuel, Charlie Williams, and Steve Moore still alive, nowhere is safe, although all the players are eagerly awaiting their matches as the $11,000 top prize twinkles in their eyes.
Saturday Winners’ Side:
Deuel vs Hatch
Wiseman vs Crosby
Owen vs Morris
Hohmann vs Rose
Saturday One-loss Side:
Coats vs Richko (Winner to face Calderon)
Archer vs Broxson (Winner to face Frank)
Mills vs Bryant (Winner to face Immonen)
Kennedy vs DiToro (Winner to face Thornfeldt)
Fujiwara vs Williams (Winner to face Davis)

Davis Comes Back Big Time

Davis Comes Back Big TimeSeminole Florida Pro Tour / Holiday, FL
by Rick Davis
While his play is often hot or cold, either seizing the event or falling short early, Mike Davis continued a record year for himself as he came back from a first-round loss to take the October 5-7 billiards stop of the Seminole Florida Pro Tour. The only 10-ball tour in existence, it always draws in top players from around the world, including WPA and WPBA pros, as well as a smattering of local and regional greats. This event, the sixth of the season, took in 60 players who battled it out through the strict rules and double-elimination format at Hammer Heads Billiard Lounge in Holiday, Florida.
Getting things started the players faced races to 7 through the first two days, and with pros everywhere, a stacked field and tough matches were seen anywhere you looked. Tournament director John DiToro continued to play his best in years as he started by defeating Davis 7-5 then dropped the axe on Richard Broumpton 7-2 and local Southern player Javier Chirino double-hill. Corey Deuel poked his head through, dropping Tommy Kennedy 7-3 and then Dave Broxson 7-4 before taking the long walk to the one-loss side. Ending the day’s highlights, Donnie Mills defeated Robb Saez 7-4, and Tony Crosby sent Thorsten Hohmann west after a 7-5 finish.
The third and final day of the action bumped the races to 8 with a single race to 9 slated for the finals. On the winners’ side everyone was scratching for the top, although it was DiToro who stunned the crowd and reached the summit. DiToro defeated Adam Wheeler 8-3 and Crosby 8-4 to reach the hot seat match, while a huge upset unfolded when long-time tour regular Neil Fujiwara slipped past multiple-event winner Steve Moore double-hill. Fujiwara soon found himself on the wrong end of a 8-4 thumping after facing Rafael Martinez, and then to finish the chart strong, DiToro squeaked past Martinez 8-7 to earn a rest in the hot seat.
On the one-los s side the longest survivor was Davis, who took four matches to reach the final day, eliminating a trio of players by not giving up more than 5 racks total. He then sent Hohmann home after a double-hill finish to end the day. Davis continued his terror in day three by knocking out Gabe Owen 8-7, Moore 8-6, and Saez 8-5 to reach the final six. In the remaining piece of the chart, Louis Ulrich was king as he eliminated Deuel 8-5 and Paul Song 8-6 also to see top-six action.
The final handful of matches blazed by as Ulrich sent Fujiwara home after an 8-5 match and Davis managed one rack better, defeating Crosby 8-4. Now raising the eyebrows of the crowd, Davis was in high gear and drilled Fujiwara 8-1 in the quarterfinals and Martinez 8-4 in the semifinals. Both Martinez, who has numerous top finishes on tour, and Fujiwara, who ended with his best finish in quite some time, played a great event and made Davis work for all he took.
With a single match waiting for either DiToro or Davis to claim, both players had their high and low points. Davis was calling upon any remaining energy after a long weekend, and DiToro was not used to late-night playoffs, having only being active on this single tour. Once the starting pistol shot Davis quickly took over, and before DiToro could answer back, Davis had taken the match 9-2 and capped off an amazing comeback, defying the odds and showing his skill and heart for the game.

Davis Makes Impossible Billiard Comeback
Florida Pro Tour / Jacksonville, FL
by Rick Davis
The Seminole Florida Pro Tour showcased an amazing comeback by Mike Davis, who worked unbelievably hard to comeback and claim the title. Taking place at Bank Shots in Jacksonville, FL, the double-elimination 10-ball event drew in 47 amazing players for the fifth stop of the season and its first stop back after the three-month summer break.
Throughout the event on the winners’ side it looked like the one of the top pros would take over, even through they exchanged blows, sending one after another to the one-loss side. Then, as the event narrowed its field, long-time supporter, promoter, and tournament director John DiToro suddenly came alive. DiToro started with a 7-5 win over Davis and then defeated top tour regulars Richard Broumpton 7-2, Adam Wheeler 8-3, and Tony Crosby 8-4, among others. On the lower half of the chart Rafael Martinez crept his way along, and after racking up four wins of his own, it was Martinez versus DiToro in the hot seat match.
On the one-loss side Davis was on a mission. Davis took all of his day one matches ending with a double-hill win to eliminate former world champion Thorsten Hohmann. Everywhere there was a great match-up being played, but only the strongest survived, and by Sunday evening that included Davis versus Crosby and Louis Ulrich versus Neil Fujiwara, just shy of the quarterfinals. Fujiwara ousted Ulrich 8-5, while Davis continued his streak. Davis started the day by knocking out former U.S. Open champ Gabe Owen 8-7 and then sent Steve Moore home 8-6, followed by Robb Saez 8-5 and Tony Crosby 8-4. At this point Davis had single-handedly eliminated most of the favorites and certainly some of the nation’s best players.
Back on the winners’ side DiToro sent Martinez west after a double-hill showdown, while Davis lit up Fujiwara 8-1. Davis continued his unstoppable run by ousting Martinez 8-5 to reach the finals.
Facing DiToro, who defeated him in what seemed like ages ago, Davis pounded DiToro with 10 matches worth of momentum before taking the single race to 9 with a 9-2 finish. It was a spectacular finish both for Davis’ comeback and some of the best play DiToro has offered up in years. The Seminole Florida Pro Tour is known for its excitement, and with this kind of field and action, there’s no question why.

Manalo Takes Two

Manalo Takes Two
Florida Pro Tour / Spring Hill, FL
by Rick Davis
The Seminole Florida Pro Tour swung into Capone’s in Spring Hill, FL, for their fourth event of the season June 2-3. Fighting through the 78-player field and surviving a late defeat, Marlon Manalo came out on top to claim the title, his second of the season.
Keeping alive on the winners’ side tour, Manalo’s countryman Al Lapena was on fire. Starting by defeating recent EnjoyPool.com 9-ball Championship winner Dennis Orcollo 7-4, Lapena drilled a series of opponents before falling hard to Tommy Kennedy. Kennedy had taken a similar path, defeating Warren Kiamco 7-4 along the way, then besting Lapena to reach the top eight. The other half of the chart had tour powerhouses Steve Moore and Manalo tearing things up, destined to meet. Both Moore and Manalo had fairly easy runs to the top with few top players to grind through. Once together, their match inched towards double-hill until finally Moore came out on top.
On the one-loss side Orcollo offered an amazing comeback, taking nine matches to reach the top eight and drilling most of his opposition. The remainder of the one-loss side changed ownership nearly every round, and in the end it was Kiamco 8-6 over Donnie Mills to take the final top eight seat.
In the hot seat match Moore met Kennedy and was upset 8-5 as Kennedy claimed the king of the hill. The carnage erupted then as Manalo eliminated Orcollo 8-3, and Kiamco drilled Lapena 8-1. Manalo continued to make short work of his opponents, knocking out Kiamco 8-3 in the quarterfinals and Moore 8-2 in the semifinals. With a single extended race to 9 waiting for Kennedy and Manalo, the score ground down to double-hill until the final rack fell in favor of Manalo, giving him another Seminole Florida Tour title.
