Steven Page Defeats Hometown Rival for Jacoby Tour Win
Hosting the 14th stop on the 2006-2007 Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour was Sharks-N-Shooters in Rocky Mount , NC . In addition to the players who traveled from near and far, several locals took part, including room owner James Gray. Two local favorites, Steven Page and Phillip Richardson, thrilled the hometown crowd by meeting in the final match.
Paul Mullins gave Page an early scare before losing a hill-hill match (7-6). Page had an easier time the rest of the way to the hotseat with wins over Russell Sasser (7-2), Ashley Cartwright (7-4) and Trey Sprye (7-1).
Meanwhile, Richardson took a longer route to the final match. After a quick win over Ty Bissett (7-1), he lost a hill-hill match to Cartwright (7-6) and was sent to the one-loss side. Richardson proceeded to plow through Ronnie Greer (7-4), Sasser (7-3), Buddy Fisher (7-0), Sidney Champion (7-5) and Sprye (7-3).
Winning the lag to break first in the final match, Richardson took the first game and then broke and ran for a 2-0 lead. After an empty break, Page shot safe and was rewarded with ball-in-hand. Page quickly ran the table to trail 2-1.
Page didn¢t make a ball on the next break and a safe battle ensued. Each player had 5 innings before the first ball was pocketed. Page played a carom and ran out, tying the score at two games apiece.
At that point, the match really began to go Page¢s way. Making the 9 on the break, then breaking and running two racks, Page capitalized on a mistake by Richardson in the eighth rack to take a commanding 6-2 lead.
Another empty break by Page left a run-out for Richardson, who broke and ran the next rack to trail 6-4.
Early in the eleventh rack, Richardson missed and left Page out. Now leading 7-4, Page again failed to pocket a ball on the break. However, alternating safeties, then misses, finally gave control of the table to Page, who took the hill, 8-4.
With a break-and-run, Page took the championship, 9-4.
The next stop on the Jacoby Tour will be at New York Billiards on August 18th in Raleigh , NC . In addition to the cash purse, players will be competing for a free entry ($100 value) into the Carolina Open, to be held October 2-7 at Fast Eddie¢s Sports Bar and Grill in Goldsboro , NC .

AZBilliards Launches Online Radio Show

AZBilliards Launches Online Radio Show
AZBilliards.com has launched RunOut Radio , an audio show hosted by AZBilliards founder Mike Howerton and billiard journalist and television commentator Jerry Forsyth. Five shows are posted currently on the site, Runoutradio.com (there is a link on the AZBilliards.com front page) in which Howerton and Forsyth interview Johnny Archer, Allison Fisher, Dragon Promotion’s Charlie Williams, Jim Wych, Jay Helfert, Raya Sports’ Yen Makabenta and Hall of Famer Ewa Laurance.
Says Howerton: Jerry and I have long talked of doing a weekly radio show where we can discuss the events of the current week in the tournament world and keep listeners in touch with the daily lives of their favorite players. Some technology has recently been improved to the point where this can be done fairly easily so we felt the time was right to launch the site. We also plan to launch an online television show this fall.
Adds Forsyth: The ability to talk to the movers and shakers directly on air and get them to share their concerns and hopes for the game is a lot of fun. Hearing a player talk about the issues of the day gives the fans a much broader insight into the personality of that player. Listening to their inflections and where they place emphasis allows you to hear what is important or trivial to them. It is a more accurate picture than we have got-ten in the past.

Turning Stone Classic IX Set to Kick Off Thursday

Turning Stone Classic IX Set to Kick Off Thursday

by InsidePOOL Staff
A full field of 128 of the best pool players in the game is arriving at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, NY, for the Turning Stone Classic IX, which begins Thursday, August 16. This event is galvanized by Mike Zuglan of the Joss Northeast 9-ball Tour.
Defending champion Johnny Archer, who has won the last two Turning Stone Classics, will be looking to see if three’s a charm. But he’s got a lot of competition. Niels Feijen, who won the $50,000 winner-takes-all prize at the International Challenge of Champions last week, will certainly be looking to add yet another title to his resume.
The Filipino contingent is well-represented so far, with Jose Parica, reigning world champion Ronnie Alcano, and EnjoyPool.com 9-ball winner Dennis Orcollo present and accounted for. Any of these players could certainly pose a serious threat to reach the finals.
Additionally, the WPBA’s Karen Corr, ranked number two currently on that tour, is there to make her mark. Corr is the only female player to ever win a stop on the Joss Northeast 9-ball Tour. And the talented and aggressive Jasmin Ouschan of Austria, winner of the EnjoyPool.com 9-ball Championship in 2006, is there to see what kind of damage she can do.
Matches begin at 4 p.m. Thursday, and there will be four rounds in two-hour intervals. There are 16 Diamond tables set up, and Accu-Stats is on-hand to film some of the featured matches. The format is a race to 9, double-elimination. With the $25,000 added, the prize fund is now at approximately $41,000. The winner will receive $8,000, and Mr. Zuglan will pay out through thirty-second place.
