Clatterbuck Undefeated on Tiger Tour
Tiger Tour / Sterling, VA
by Rick Davis
Taking place at First Break Café in Sterling, VA, the Tiger Pool Tour brought a 58-player field to fight during the May 5-6 action. Coming through unscathed was tour regular Matt Clatterbuck, who went undefeated to claim the top spot and move into the top ten on the tour’s rankings.
Clatterbuck could not have had a more difficult road to the finals. Starting with a win over Shaun “Get Some” Wilkie, a tour heavyweight and general terror in the Northeast, he then moved on to defeat top touring pro Mike Davis. Another pair of wins brought Caltterbuck to face yet another tour regular, Brandon Shuff, who he defeated as well to face Pookie Rasmeloungon in the hot seat match, where once again he prevailed.
On the one-loss side tournament director Andy Lincoln was making a comeback along with Wilkie. Lincoln, who had taken a first-round loss, took down seven opponents including powerhouses Davis, Chris Futrell, and Jerry Slivka. But Lincoln missed a step in his next round and was eliminated by Jeff Abernathy, who went on to reach the quarterfinals. On the other side of the one-loss side chart, Wilkie also took down seven matches but also kept to par as he was defeated by the incoming Shuff, who met Abernathy in the quarterfinals.
From there a few quick matches zapped the event to a close. In the quarterfinals Shuff knocked out Abernathy and then stayed hot as he ousted Rasmeloungon, too. With only one match remaining Shuff was gunning for revenge, but Clatterbuck had played too strong for too long and shut down Shuff to claim the title.

2nd Brandon Shuff
3rd Pookie Rasmeloungon

Hatch Gives a Billiards Exposition
Seminole Florida Pro Tour / Miami, FL
by Rick Davis
The Seminole Florida Pro Tour sizzled May 5-6 when it pulled in for its latest tour stop at New Wave Billiards in Miami, FL, for the season’s third event. Chopping his way through the field, Dennis “The Hatchet Man” Hatch decimated the field to come back from a late loss to claim the top finish.
As the top 16 returned for play on Sunday Hatch bested tour regular Neil Fujiwara 8-3 then pounded “The Prince of Pool” Corey Deuel 8-1 to reach the hot seat match. On his way there as well was another tour regular, Donnie Mills, who defeated Marlon Manalo and Steve Moore, 8-7 and 8-3, respectively to face Hatch. In the hot seat Mills was able to turn the tables on Hatch’s streak and sent him west just shy of double-hill, defeating him 8-6.
On the one-loss side rounds flashed by as quickly as the players’ life spans in the event. Manalo caught a gear after his early loss and eliminated tour regulars Dave Grossman and Tony “The Sniper” Crosby, both 8-3, then sent Deuel home as well after an 8-1 shellacking. This put Manalo in the quarterfinals, although for a while it was unclear who would meet him there as favorites changed after each round on the rest of the one-loss side chart. James Roberts eliminated Fujiwara 8-3, but then Tony “T-Rex” Chohan knocked out Roberts by the same margin. Chohan was ousted the next round by Moore, who went on to face Manalo. The quarterfinals became a grinder until Manalo finally squeaked through 8-7.
In the semifinals Hatch began to display his clinic on shooting skills to all those watching as he destroyed Manalo 8-1, including a five-rack string of break and runs. Back in the finals against Mills, the single race to 9 offered even ground, though Hatch opened another five-pack on Mills, and before Mills knew what hit him, the match was over with Hatch coming through 9-4 to claim the latest stop of the Seminole Florida Pro Tour.

Top Billiard Players All Undefeated
Viking cue 9-ball Tour / Knoxville, TN
by Rick Davis
The Viking cue 9-ball Tour took a Southern swing and smashed into Breakers Billiards in Knoxville, TN, for their latest series of events May 5-6. Four divisions were held that included an open, amateur, 14-and-under juniors, and 19-and-under juniors that all together drew in 60 players. In each of the divisions the winners went uncontested, taking their events undefeated.
The biggest draw of the weekend was the open division, which was completely controlled by Shannon “The Cannon” Daulton. Daulton met up with Tony Watson in the hot seat match and, after dispensing with him 9-7, rested comfortably in the finals. On the one-loss side 12-year-old Landon Shuffett was stunning the crowd as he kept alive after his first loss on Sunday. Shuffett came back from a 7-3 deficit to win double-hill, returning from an 0-3 deficit to win nine straight racks, and then eliminated Jerry Groom 9-7 to reach the quarterfinals. Hot on his heels was Kelly Green, who knocked out Robert Green then bested Shuffett just shy of double-hill at 9-7. Watson was not impressed by the show and showed Green the door 9-6 to own the one-loss side and return to face Daulton in the finals. There each player gained ground through baby steps until finally Daulton surged ahead to take the match double-hill.
Taking place concurrently, the amateur division’s strings were being pulled by tour regular Brian Bagwell, who met and defeated Jimmy Weemes 7-5 in the hot seat match. From there it was a one-loss side race as Rick ball eliminated Lynn Brown 5-3 in the quarterfinals, then was knocked out himself by Weemes 5-3 in the semifinals. In the finals the extended race between Bagwell and Weemes offered little excitement, and Bagwell drilled Weemes to a quick 7-2 finish. This is Bagwell’s second amateur Viking Tour win, which, by the tour’s rules, no longer allows him to play amateur events this season; he must enter open divisions because of his to high level of play.
The juniors competitions offered quick action in both the under-19-years division, where Michael Rudd ruled, as well as the 14-and-under division, where Dylan Vale dominated. In the 19-and-under field, Rudd powered his way through the hot seat match 5-2, then drilled Jake Newman 5-1 in the finals to claim his national qualifier spot. In the 14-and-under field, Vail sent Brandon Stiltner west 5-2 in the hot seat match, while Josh Miller eliminated Tyler Mayfield double-hill in the quarterfinals. Miller played strong, eliminating Stiltner in the semifinals also double-hill; however, the final match was too much and Vail pounced on Miller, shutting him out 5-0 to claim the qualifier. In addition, the only junior ladies’ entry, 11-year-old Courtney Frank, also qualified by virtue of being the highest-finishing lady.

by Rick Davis
The May 5-6 Tri-State Tour stop pulled into Masters Billiards in Queens, NY, where 28 players clashed in the B/D handicapped 9-ball event. Coming back from a mid-event loss was Stewart “The Scottish Lion” Warnock, who bested the field to take down first place.
Late action on the winners’ side saw Warnock fall to Radame Espinal 7-5, putting Espinal in the hot seat match where he faced Mike Wong. Korea Dominates Europe in 3-Cushion Billiards

Korea Dominates Europe in 3-Cushion Billiards
Korean TV network XTM aired the first ever XTM Billiards Cup with Team Korea taking on Team Europe in 3-Cushion. The teams were evenly matched with the Korea Team all professional pocket billiard players with carom backrounds while Europe had the versatile Mika Immonen, also a frequent carom player, teamed with eagle eyed ace Jasmin Ouschan, and their ace in the hole Semih Sayginer.
With our line up and having Semih leading us, I really like our chances said a confident Immonen referring to the rules where the Captain was allowed to coach the players and having Semih as the best carom player in the event.
The Korea Team was Captained by King of Carom runner up and numerous Korea 9-ball Champion Shin Young Park. His comrades included Pil Hyun Cho and #1 Womans Pool Champion of Korea Yu Ram Cha.
The format was race to 15 points in singles, and race to 10 points in doubles and triples matches. For the first time in carom history, players would alternate shots with coaching involved among partners. Womans matches race to 7 points. First team to reach 6 matches would win the event.
In the first match, the Korean Doubles of Park and Cho dominated Ouschan and Sayginer 10-3.
Can we play 9-ball afterwards? said Ouschan after the match. Immonen and Sayginer would team up next against Cha and Park. In a stunning upset, the European duo saw their 3-0 lead diminish into a 10-4 loss to the male and female duet. Korea led 2-0. The bad rolls continued for Europe as they led 9 points on the hill to Korea’s 6 points, only to see Korea run in perfect sync 4 points in a row to steal the match. With the pressure on their anchor, Sayginer survived a close match against Cho in the singles 15-11.
Anything can happen in a race to 15 points said the Turkish Champion. Korea 3 to 1 Europe. Ouschan faced Cha in the Ladies singles match but could not overcome Cha’s superior rail knowledge and fell 7-3.
These Korean players are all pool players? said an incredulous Ouschan commenting on the strong rail backround all Korean professional pool and carom players seemed to have.
In another what could have been match, Immonen played his best carom match yet in his career and led Korea’s Captain Park until 14-11. In a much needed win, again Europe’s hopes were dashed as Park created a 4 point run to steal another win for Korea 15-14. A dejected Immonen could not dwell long on his loss as team 3-on-3 was next.
Mika showed alot of heart in that match playing a better carom player. said Charlie Williams.
Korea now led 5-1 on the hill.
With their backs to the walls, Europe came out firing and played near flawless coming out with 4 point run off the opening shot in the 3-on-3 play. They would crush Korea this time 10-2 under the tutelage of Sayginer. Europe 2 and Korea 5.
If Immonen and Ouschan could pull a minor upset against Park and Cha, this would pave the way for Semih to win his singles match and then put the event back into 3-on-3 again where Europe seemed the strongest. The European duo looked strong and hopeful as they led the match even until 8-5. But as it happened all day, Korea came back with Cha and Park winning 10-8 and closing out the event with Korea on top of Europe for the first ever XTM Billiards Cup.
It wasn’t easy, but it was fun. said the jovial Sayginer at the conclusion of the event.
Playing with Semih, I knew it was going to be fun. But it has also been very educational. said Immonen.
For the purists, some might be horrified at the new formats we’ve developed for 3-Cushion billiards. I mean, Willie Hoppe’s probably turning over in his grave, said Charlie Williams, Founder of Dragon Promotions and one of the creative forces of the event. But for the image of carom to improve and the sport to grow, you need to draw new audiences and that is what we have accomplished.
The matches were aired on XTM, a total entertainment network covering movies, comedies, and sports. Korea vs Europe 3-Cushion event was the number one watched sports event of the day and drew record ratings for billiards.
The next Dragon Promotions 3-Cushion event will be 3-Cushion Grandmaster which will be historic as the first ever carom event to air on ESPN or major broadcast network in the USA. The event will take place May 16,2007 at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
