2012 U.S. Open 9-Ball Kicks off

Pool players from all around the world have gathered for the beginning of the 37th installment of the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships October 21-27. Two-time champion Darren “Dynamite” Appleton will have his hands full defending his title against the other 216 players.

Appleton, who received a first-round bye, isn’t the only Brit representing at the Open. Karl Boyes, former world 9-ball champion Daryl Peach, former China Open Chris Melling, Mark Gray, and Jayson Shaw.

For the Filipino contingent, Efren “Bata” Reyes won his first-round match against George Mclanahan 11-1. Dennis Orcollo, who is having an extraordinary year, got a bye, as did former U.S. champ Alex Pagulayan. Santos Sambajon Jr. whitewashed Adam Spell, and Francisco Bustamante must play Bill Dugan in his first round. Ronnie Alcano plays Mike Delawder in the first round.

Defending champion Darren Appleton will be making an historic attempt to be the first ever player to win three consecutive titles.

Mika Immonen, who won this event in 2008 and 2009, had a first-round bye and will next play Bahram Lofty, who just defeated Edmundo Ambros 11-1. Shane Van Boening, winner in 2007, received a first-round bye.

Japan’s Kenichi Uchigaki, who took seventh place at last year’s event, received a first-round bye and next will play Dylan Letchworth. Yukio Akagariyama, last year’s world 9-ball champ, is also present and had a bye in the first round.

Shawn Putnam, who was runner-up to Appleton last year, is present, as are other American threats such as Johnny “The Scorpion” Archer, Earl Strickland, Hunter Lombardo, Corey Deuel, Mike Davis, Shannon Daulton, Tony Robles.

Heavy hitters from Europe include former winner Ralf Souquet, Niels Feijen, Thorsten Hohmann, Ralph Ekert, David Alcaide, Nick Van Den Berg, and Oliver Ortmann.

This year the tournament is being held at a new venue, the Holiday Inn Virginia Beach / Norfolk Hotel and Conference Center.
