The 2010 World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) World Junior 9-Ball Championships began November 29 with the North American junior players thriving on their home court.

In the last round of the first evening’s competition, five of the six matches featured North American players battling to stay on the undefeated side of the chart. The Canadian and former WPA World Junior champion, Brittany Bryant, defeated U.S. player Jauslinn Arnold from California 9-3. Jesse Engel from Minnesota played a strong set and sent Marcos Garcia from Nicaragua to the one-loss side, winning 9-5. Landon Shuffett of Kentucky took the lead 6-3 against Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz of Spain but lost the next six consecutive games and the match. Danny Olson of South Dakota matched up with Roman Pruchai of Russia and fell short 9-4.

Briana Miller of Pennsylvania faced off with Karen Garcia of Nicaragua in an exciting Internet video streaming match. After making several errors, Miller quickly trailed in the match 6-3. However, a costly miss on the 9 ball by Garcia on her hill game kept Miller’s hopes alive. Garcia sat in her seat as Miller won three consecutive games to take the match hill-hill. In the final rack, balls were pocketed by both players until Garcia had the opportunity to win. A position error from the 8 ball to the 9 made for a difficult shot in which she missed the 9 ball and gave Miller a clear shot on the final ball, straight in the corner pocket to win an exciting match 7-6.

Earlier rounds found Billy Thorpe of Ohio winning his first match against Shohtaroh Maruyama of Japan 9-6 but then falling to Wojtek Szewchyk of Poland 9-3. Brendan Crockett of California had a heart-breaking loss to Kristoffer Mindreboe of Norway 9-7. Liz Lovely of Ohio lost her first match of the event to the steadfast German player Simone Kuenzl 9-3. Ryan Spence of Canada squeaked by Harry Wilds of South Africa 9-8 in his first match but then lost to Jesse Engel of the U.S. 9-3. Pahdahsung Shognoh of Canada fought his way back from a 3-8 deficit against Danny Olson, but Olson proved to handle the pressure, winning the match 9-7.
