Winners’ Round Cuts to Final 16

The first evening round Thursday at the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships saw the 32 undefeated players winnowed down to 16, and with the notable exception of 18-year-old Jesse Engel, who was responsible for besting Earl Strickland the night before, delivering Mike “The Mouth” Sigel to the one-loss side 11-1, the matches were all close.

Bustamante was inducted into the Billiard Congress of America’s Hall of Fame Thursday evening.

Filipinos Francisco Bustamante, who was inducted into the Billiard Congress of America’s Hall of Fame Thursday evening; Efren Reyes; and Warren Kiamco successfully remained undefeated. Bustamante bested Manny Chau 11-6, Reyes won over Marc “Spain” Vidal 11-7, and Kiamco sent Huidji See west 11-6.

Defending champion Mika “Iceman” Immonen is still going strong, having easily handled Ricky Yang 11-3. Immonen’s next match will be against Gabe Owen, who just bested Robb Saez 11-8. Former U.S. Open champion Johnny Archer is also on fire, besting fellow Southern star Stevie Moore 11-6. Archer’s next match will be against Lo Li-wen, who went double-hill with Chris Melling before moving on.

Ralf Souquet and Raj Hundal had a close match, with “The Surgeon” advancing 11-9. Souquet’s next opponent will be Rodney Morris, who bested Hall of Famer Nick Varner 11-7 earlier. Former world 9-ball champion Thorsten Hohmann is also undefeated, having won his match over Daryl Peach of the U.K. 11-8. Hohmann will next face off against Engel.

Spain’s David Alcaide will go up against Bustamante in the next round, having defeated Stan Tourangeau 11-5. Kiamco will face Corey Deuel, fresh off a win over Michael Wong 11-3, and Reyes will play Darren Appleton, who just defeated fellow countryman Jayson Shaw 11-6.
