by InsidePOOL Staff
Kelly Fisher arrived in Norman, OK, ready to defend her WPBA U.S. Open title against 63 other hopefuls at the Riverwind Casino. The event began July 30 and will conclude August 2.
K. Fisher is making a strong bid for the title, having won her first-round match against Erica Testa 9-2 and then escaping a hill-hill squeaker against Nicole Keeney. Her next battle will come from Allison Fisher, who has notched wins over Helene Caukin 9-1 and Ramona Biddle 9-2.
In a surprising turn of events, last event’s champion, Jasmin Ouschan of Austria, was sent to the one-loss side by Kim Shaw 9-3 after surviving a hill-hill bout with Susan Mello in the first round. Shaw goes on to face Ga Young Kim, who has bested Liz Lovely 9-3 and Jennifer Barretta 9-8.
Monica Webb is going strong after two close victories over Sueyen Rhee 9-6 and Joanne Ashton 9-7. Her next match will be against Kyoko Sone, who has allowed only one game between her first two opponents—she bested Maureen Seto 9-0 and then Line Kjorsvik 9-1.

Iceman Crushes Amsterdan Billiards Event

Mika Immonen Dominant in Stellar Performance at Amsterdam Billiards
Written By Jerry Tarantola, NYCgrind.com
A full field of 64 pool players quickly sold out the Predator Tour’s 10th event of the season. Even though it was a beautiful summer weekend, the field was filled in 40 minutes. The popular Manhattan local drew top local and regional players to come out to show NYC’s knowledgeable crowd that they’ve got game.
Standout names that were in attendance were Frankie Hernandez, Tony Robles, Mika Immonen, “Ginky” George Sansouci, Al Lapena, Zion Zvi, “Spain” Marc Vidal, Matt Krah and Bobby Blackmore.
Amsterdam Billiards has a history of hosting pro events and exhibitions, as well as bringing celebrities around the game of pool. While there were no notable celebrities in attendance, each of the 64 players were looking to make a statement at the NYC hotspot.
The Predator Tour event brought back the final 8 players in a showdown beginning at High Noon. The winner’s side match ups were: Al Lapena vs. Bobby Blackmore and reining “US Open Champion” Mika Immonen vs breakthrough player Zion Zvi.
Zion has been playing tremendous as of late, including winning the 8th Stop of the Predator Tour as well as placing 3rd in the Maryland Straight Pool Championships. While Zion showed that he can hang with anyone in the world, Mika was able to clutch out the win 9-7.
Bobby Blackmore (def) Al Lapena 9-7 lining up the winner’s side “Hot Seat” with arguably the best pool player in the world…. Mika Immonen.
Mika is still fresh from snapping off the Qatar Open, and is having a remarkable year, with another recent win at the Japan Open.
Bobby wasn’t able to put the heat on the “Iceman” as Mika controlled the match en-route to a 9-4 score. The “W” left Mika in sole position in the finals on the winner’s side of the bracket.
On the one loss side the match ups were… Matt Krah vs Victor Nau and Mhet Vergara vs Joey Kong.
Matt Krah (def) Victor Nau 9-6, before losing to Al Lapena in a tough “Hill-Hill” battle (9-8).
On the bottom half of the bracket Joey Kong “King Kong” played a big game during his 1st match over local Filipino top player Mhet Vergara.
Joey followed up with another strong performance, but couldn’t overcome new player on the scene, Zion Zvi’s consistent and clutch play. Zion was able to clutch out the set “Hill-Hill” 9-8.
Zion was then matched up with a top Fil-Am player Al Lapena on the front table. This match displayed strong play by both players including outstanding shotmaking and safety play. Al jumped out to an early 5-1 lead before Zion came back with a near perfect performance to win 9-7. When the dust settled, it was Zion Zvi getting the win by way of a 9-7 score.
The stage was set in a match-up between local top player Bobby Blackmore and Zion Zvi. Bobby is known for his aggressive play, hard break and quick tempo. Zion has a more determined shot making process and controlled game. The contrast in styles coupled with the fact that both of these players wanted to have a shot at “The Iceman” built up this feature match up.
Zion was dominant in a outstanding performance allowing Bobbby to only win 3 games in the race to 9.
After a short break that seemed to spark a heavy thunderstorm, the knowledgeable NYC billiards crowd was primed for the feature matchup. The final match was one race to 11 games, determining the winner of the 10th Predator Tour Stop of the season.
Go4pool.net streamed the final match and had commentary by “Snookie” Diana Rojas, “Smitty” Dan Smith, and tournament director, William Finnegan.
Zion won the lag, and pocketed a ball on his first break, but missed a tough cut on the one ball that cost him 2 games. Mika ran that rack out, and broke and ran out the next rack as well. The players traded the next two games making the score 4-2.
Mika went on an impressive 7-2 run, en-route to a 11-4 score… capping off an impressive tournament.
“The Iceman” is preparing for the Mezz Classic which will take place in Orlando from August 6-9th. The former World Champion is looking forward to seeing the cue company that makes his cue give back to the pros. Along with playing great, Mika also mentioned that he feels that he is making a great contribution to the game through his recently-released instructional DVD, “Mastering Pool.”
The Predator Tour would like to thank all its players who came out to this event, as well as the tour’s sponsors: Blatt Billiards, Delta 13 Racks and The Seminole Tribe of Florida.

A full field of 64 pool players quickly sold out the Predator Tour's 10th event of the season, but it was Immonen that stole the day.
Final Results:
1st: Mika Immonen $1150
2nd: Zion Zvi $775
3rd: Bobby Blackmore $550
4th: Al Lapena $400

On the west side of the bracket, Diana Rojas played a gritty match against Sam Islam (7-4), lining up a match between her and Ed Sumner.

Junior National Billiards Champions Crowned

Shuffett, Lovely, Crockett and Miller Crowned Junior Nationals Champions
Billiard Education Foundation Junior Nationals / Normal, IL
Nearly 100 hopeful junior players arrived for the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) 21st Annual Junior Nationals, held July 23-26 in the Bone Student Center at Illinois State University in Normal, IL, and when the dust of the heated competition settled, four champions had emerged. Two-time 14-and-under Boys Junior Nationals Champion Landon Shuffett, hailing from Greensburg, KY, pulled off another win his first time out in the 19-and-under Boys Division, while Liz Lovely of Centerville, OH topped the 19-and-under Girls Division. Brendan Crockett of Bell Canyon, CA went undefeated through the 14-and-under Boys Division, while Briana Miller of Allentown, PA took the 14-and-under Girls title for the third year in a row.

In the 46-entrant 19-and-under Boys division, Shuffett didn’t give up more than three games to any one of his opponents until he reached the winners’ side final four, where he met 2008 runner-up Nick Tafoya of Albuquerque, NM. Giving up five games to Tafoya, Shuffett moved on to the hot seat match against Jesse Engel of Columbia Heights, MN. Engel, who’d just eased by Ryan Behnke of Farley, IA 9-3, got more games against Shuffett than anyone else had, but six wasn’t enough to earn the hot seat, and he moved over to the left side of the bracket.
On the one-loss side, Tafoya met up with Joshua Newman (Bessoner City, NC), who’d just shut out Ryan Dunn (Hillsboro, TN). Holding Newman to five games, Tafoya moved on to Skyler Woodward (Ledbetter, KY), who was coming off a hill-hill win over Behnke. The fairly tight match ended 9-7 in Newman’s favor, and it was time for him to battle Engel for the right to a rematch with Shuffett in the finals. With his 9-7 win, Engel earned that right, but his rematch didn’t go his way. Although the single-set final race was longer, Shuffett once again held Engel to six games, becoming champion with an 11-6 win.

Liz Lovely prevailed in the Girl's 19 and Under division.

In the 32-entrant 14-and-under Boys division, Crockett had given up only nine games before meeting Bryce Lepak of Winter Springs, FL in the hot seat match. The boys were both coming off of 7-1 wins, Crockett over Buster Loving (Rockaway Beach, MO) and Lepak over Logan Loving (Forsyth, MO), and this match was a bit lopsided, as well. Sending Lepak west 7-3, Crockett waited in the hot seat for an opponent, which turned out to be Billy Thorpe of Dayton, OH. Thorpe, who’d suffered a first-round loss, had plowed his way through the one-loss side, finishing up with L. Loving 7-3, Chad Behnke (Farley, IA) 7-3, and Lepak 7-2 in the semifinals. Thorpe, who had fallen to Shuffett in last year’s finals, unfortunately fared no better in the 2009 finals, as Crockett’s strong 9-5 win earned him the 14-and-under Boys title.
In the 12-entrant 19-and-under Girls division, Centerville, OH’s Lovely arrived in the hot seat match following a 7-1 win over Stephanie Stone (Gastonia, NC). Joining her was Evansville, IN’s Chelsea Hardwick, who was coming off her own 7-1 win over Laura Benck (Manhattan, IL). Lovely, who had given up only two games up to that match, won hill-hill over Hardwick, sending her to the one-loss semifinal match against Jauslinn Arnold of Bakersfield, CA. Hardwick, who’d been put in 2nd by her older sister Allison in 2008, was looking for another go at the finals but came up one game short, falling 7-6 to Arnold. Arnold had managed just one game against Lovely in the second round, and though she managed a couple more in the finals, it was Lovely who closed it out with a decisive 9-3 win.
With just two girls in the 14-and-under division, the format was a bit different: best of three races to seven. Taylor Reynolds of Waterville, ME was the brave soul trying to dethrone Miller, and she did manage five games in the first set. But the second set, which she would need to win to push a third set, did not go her way, as Miller’s continuing reign was sealed with a 7-1 win.
The BCA, as a member of the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA), is given an allotted number of entries into the World Junior 9-Ball Championships and allows the BEF to distribute those awards. Of the 4 boys entries awarded, 3 were given to the top 3 finishers in the 19 & under boys’ division ( Landon Shuffett, Jesse Engel & Nick Tafoya) and 1 entry to the winner of the 14 & under boys’ division, Brendan Crockett. The 2 girls entries were given to the winner of each of the girls’ divisions, Liz Lovely & Briana Miller.

Wheeler, Howe Wipe Out KF Cues Field
Posted by admin as Billiard Tour News - Pool Tour News
KF Cues 9-Ball Tour / Fort Pierce, FL
by Lea Andrews
Adam Wheeler chose to earn his first KF Cues 9-Ball Tour Open win on the last regular stop of the season. Wheeler went undefeated through the field of 41 who arrived at Ultimate Billiards in Fort Pierce, FL, for the $1,000 added event July 25, while Albert Howe took first in the 62-entrant $700-added amateur event July 26.
Wheeler followed up a 9-1 blowout over Jerry Calderon with a hill-hill win over Manny Chau to gain the hot seat, while on the one-loss side, Charlie Williams ousted Mike Delawder 7-3, tournament director Tony Crosby 7-3, and Jeff Hughes 7-2 to land in the one-loss quarterfinals with Calderon. Calderon, coming off of a hill-hill win over Prescott Buckwold, held Williams to just two games and moved on to the one-loss semifinals against Chau. The road partners, who were headed to another tournament in the morning, chose to forego a match in favor of a coin toss, which Chau flipped and Calderon called – incorrectly.
In the final set, Wheeler got off to a strong 5-1 lead, forcing Chau to try to make a comeback. While he made a valiant effort, getting within two at 7-5, it wasn’t enough to keep Wheeler from notching his first win in one set.
In the amateur event on Sunday, Howe was fighting for the win plus Player of the Year honors, which would yield him $500 and a custom KF Cue. A win in the winners’ side final four would give him the title, and he got it, sending Jimmy Sandaler west 7-3. He faltered in the hot seat match, though, falling to Sam Ketcham 7-2. On the one-loss side, Sandaler took down Mike Delawder 6-2 and moved on to Richard Knight, who was coming off a 5-4 win over Jesse Langston. Moving past Langston 6-5, Sandaler came up once again against Howe, and the outcome was no different. Howe earned a rematch with Ketcham and a shot at capping off the season with a win by putting Sandaler in third 5-2.

Adam Wheeler chose to earn his first KF Cues 9-Ball Tour Open win on the last regular stop of the season.
In the single race-to-8 final match, Howe truly played the part of Player of the Year, working the racks even better than he had all day, and he took first with an 8-2 win. The top non-cashing lady finisher in the amateur event, Samantha Huber, earned $40, and the top-finishing junior in the open event, Michael Townsend, earned $30.
Though second in points (leader Crosby, as KF Cues Tour director, is ineligible), earning Player of the Year in the open division was Julio Aquino, who, like Howe, earned $500 and a custom KF Cue. Second and third place finishers in both divisions each receive a custom KF Cue: James Roberts and Jason Richko (second and third in open, respectively), and Mark Wathen and Mike Delawder (second and third in amateur, respectively).
The season finales for both divisions will be held at Strokers Billiards II in Tampa, FL. The $2,500-added minimum amateur finale, the Florida State Amateur 9-Ball Championships, will be held August 29-30, while the $2,500-added minimum open finale, the Florida State Open 9-Ball Championships, will be held September 5-6. Davis Deals a Blow to the Speakeazy Billiards Field
Posted by admin as Billiard Tour News - Pool Tour News
Great Southern Billiard Tour / Sanford, NC
by Lea Andrews
Sean Davis plowed an undefeated path through the Great Southern Billiard Tour field the weekend of July 25-26. The $1,500-added A/B amateur event, held at Speakeazy Billiards in Sanford, NC, drew 74 tough competitors.
B-ranked Davis found himself in the hot seat match following a hill-hill match with B-ranked Brad Shearer. Meeting him there was AA-ranked Sam Monday, who’d just sent B-ranked J.R. Poste to the left side of the bracket 11-5. Getting off to a 4-1 lead, Monday seemed the likely winner, but Davis battled back, tying it at six and at seven to win the match while Monday, who was going to 11, still needed four games.
On the one-loss side, AA-ranked Scott Lewis fell 7-7 to B-ranked Danny Crouch, who was coming off a 7-6 win over A-ranked Larry Faulk. Meanwhile, B-ranked Danny Mastermaker had his own 7-6 win over A-ranked David Brown, moving on to a 7-4 win over B-ranked Barry Mashburn before falling to Poste 7-3. Poste moved on to the quarterfinals against Crouch, who’d come out on top of a hill-hill match with Shearer. Crouch didn’t allow Poste as many games, though, holding him to four and moving on to the semifinals against Monday.
Although the match began relatively evenly, tying up at four, that was where Monday made his move. After making five balls on the break in rack nine, Monday ran out to make it 5-4 and didn’t let Crouch back in, finishing up 11-4 to get back to Davis.
In the true double-elimination final match, Monday got off to a 2-0 lead, but Davis tied it at two, at three, and, after Monday’s unlikely miss on a 9 ball, at four. Monday got it to 6-4, but that’s where he stopped. Davis took rack 11, making it 6-5, and made it 6-6 after Monday missed the 1 ball in rack 12. Davis’ controlled and powerful break put three balls in the pockets in the final rack, opening up the table for game, set, match, and tournament.

Sean Davis plowed an undefeated path through the Great Southern Billiard Tour field the weekend of July 25-26.
Results:
1st Sean Davis $1,000

DeGiosafatto Takes Down the Comet Billiards Field
Posted by admin as Billiard Tour News - Pool Tour News
The Tri-State Tour / Parsippany, NJ
by Lea Andrews
James DeGiosafatto, Jr. came through the one-loss side to claim first in The Tri-State Tour’s second stop of the new season. The $500-added C-D event drew 25 players to Comet Billiards in Parsippany, NJ.
C+-ranked DeGiosafatto’s early loss took him out of the spotlight, and as the final four on the A-side emerged, C+-ranked Ryan McCarthy seemed the likely winner. His 6-4 win over C+-ranked Dave Shlemperis placed him in the hot seat match against Duane Daily, who was coming off a 6-5 win over C-ranked Michael Rodrigues. Daily was treated to another 6-5 match, but came out on the wrong end this time and moved over to the left side of the bracket.
Over on the one-loss side, DeGiosafatto was making his move. A 6-3 win over C-ranked Antonio Navarro, a 7-4 win against D+-ranked Rick Shellhouse, and a 6-1 win over Shlemperis landed him in the quarterfinals against C+-ranked T.J. Smithers, who’d just had some strong wins, himself: 6-3 over Ed Miller (C), 6-3 over Duane Toney (C+), and 6-2 over Rodrigues. The two went back and forth, with DeGiosafatto coming out on top 6-5 to face Dailey in the semifinals.
It was Dailey who had earlier sent DeGiosafatto west 6-4, and in this match, DeGiosafatto got his revenge, moving on to the finals with a convincing 6-3 win.
The modified final set featured one player coming straight out of a match and one player coming out of a chair, as McCarthy had had to wait a couple of hours for an opponent to come through. McCarthy played well in the finals, but not as well as the way he’d played getting there, and DeGiosafatto, taking advantage of the rolls coming his way, closed out the win 8-6.

James DeGiosafatto, Jr. came through the one-loss side to claim first in The Tri-State Tour’s second stop of the new season.
Results:
1st James DeGiosafatto, Jr. $500
2nd Ryan McCarthy $230
3rd Duane Dailey $150
4th T.J. Smithers $100
5th Michael Rodrigues $55

No Stopping Taylor on New England Women’s Tour

New England Women’s 9-Ball Tour / East Wareham, MA
by Lea Andrews
Although Liz Taylor found herself in an unfamiliar place at the third stop of the New England Women’s 9-Ball Tour – the left side of the bracket – she ended the day where she has at each stop so far: first place. Taylor was among the field of 17 ladies who gathered July 26 at The Fan Club in East Wareham, MA.
Taylor’s loss came in the second round courtesy of Bonnie Saritelli, so she was conspicuously absent from the winners’ side final four, where WPBA player Candi Rego pushed aside Linda Morton 7-5, and Janet Tycks did the same to Norma Corneau by a strong 7-1 margin. Tycks’ victory put her somewhere she’d never been on this tour, the hot seat match, but Rego didn’t let her take the hot seat itself, sending her left 7-3.
On the one-loss side, Taylor made her way through Debra Nicoll 7-5, Nicole Netherland 7-1, and Corneau 7-1 before coming upon heavy-hitter Stacie Borbeau, who was coming off wins over Saritelli 7-2, Wendy Snow 7-3, and Morton 7-2. Although Borbeau came close to taking down Taylor, she couldn’t quite get there, and Taylor moved on 7-6 to face Tycks.
It was Tycks’ first time in the one-loss semifinals, as well, so Taylor’s 7-3 win gave Tycks her highest finish on the tour to date, and put Taylor into the finals yet again.
The modified single race would end if Rego reached seven games first, but would extend to a race to nine if Taylor got there first. And get there she did, taking first with a decisive 9-3 win.
Results:
1st Liz Taylor $225
2nd Candi Rego $150
3rd Janet Tycks $100
4th Stacie Borbeau $50
